PRODUCER ORGANISATIONS - dEFINITION

Producer organizations - POs for short - are associations of agricultural producers of fruit and vegetables that pursue the following objectives, among others:​


Ensuring planned production that meets demand, especially in terms of quality and quantity.

Bunding the supply and marketing the production of their members.

Optimization of production costs and stabilization of producer prices.

Use of environmentally sound cultivation methods, production techniques and waste management techniques.

Austria has a total of 9 recognized producer organizations for fruit and vegetables. Of these, 4 are recognized for fruit, 3 for vegetables and 2 for fruit/vegetables intended for processing or individual products thereof.
Across Europe, there are more than 1,500 POs for fruit and vegetables and more than 30 transnational POs, which generate a value of marketed production of about 57 billion euros per annum. More than half of the recognized agricultural producer organizations in the European Union produce fruits and vegetables. (As of 2.2023, DG Agri).​
